International Friendship Day with People’s Inc.
July 30 is International Friendship Day!
We put the spotlight on friendship and its power to bridge the cultural divide, promote peace and harmony, and create a better world for everyone.
Let’s celebrate this special day and sing along with a song we composed!
All we want, are some friends, to tide us through, the good and the bad.
All we want, is to know, we are not alone, in this big blue world.
All we want, are well wishes, to hold strong and fly higher
ALL we have, are memories together,
so on this day, tell your friends, I wish you a happy friendship day!
The United Nations (UN) declared July 30th as the day to put the spotlight on friendship and its power to bridge the divide between and among the world’s peoples. Through friendship, the UN believes that the world can “achieve lasting stability and generate passion for a better world.”
How it all came to be
The International Friendship Day was an offshoot of the UN’s declaration of 2001-2010 as the International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World.
Culture of Peace was defined as “a set of values, attitudes, and behaviours that reject violence and endeavour to prevent conflicts by addressing their root causes with a view to solving problems.”
There were eight areas of action for all nations to promote in order to achieve a culture of peace. These were:
- foster a culture of peace through education,
- promote sustainable economic and social development,
- promote respect for all human rights,
- ensure equality between women and men,
- foster democratic participation,
- advance understanding, tolerance and solidarity,
- support participatory communication and the free flow of information and knowledge, and
- promote international peace and security.
This is where the International Friendship Day came in. The UN believes that if people learn to live together in peace and harmony, then that will contribute to the strengthening of international peace and cooperation. With friendship, we can inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities!
